November 14, 2019: Fit feet for Christmas

The festive season is fast approaching and December will be tough on our feet!

As we approach Christmas, the Podiatrists at Maidenhead Podiatry see an increase of people seeking advice on foot pain.

As we get caught up in the spirit of the season it is easy to overlook how much more active we are outside of our normal routine.

Longer shopping trips to buy gifts, knick-knacks, stocking fillers and doo-dads!

We spend more time on our feet with social events, parties and celebrations as well as increased time standing in queues, wrapping presents and cooking.

You need to look after your feet! If your feet feel sore it makes you feel tired and weary. If your feet feel great it gives you a lift and makes you feel like you have more energy.

Much of the soreness and discomfort we see at Maidenhead Podiatry is acute or rapid onset.

This is frequently due to poor choice or poor fitting footwear.

Just think of how much further you are going to walk and dance this Christmas – even if it is Dad-dancing!!

As with anything, it’s important to choose the right tools for the job.
  • footwear should fasten around your foot – avoid slip-on shoes as they move around too much, offer little support and can cause rubbing
  • look for a soft sole with reasonable thickness and cushioning
  • a modest heel frequently increases comfort, avoid footwear that is completely flat
  • avoid all heels over an inch high for routine wear
  • choose a round or square toe-box to allow your toes room to move and avoiding squashing
  • where practical, wear socks or pop-socks to reduce the risk of blisters from rubbing
  • rest regularly when possible
  • put your feet up when you get home to allow them to recover
  • if you know are going to be on your feet all day – go for comfort, not fashion!
The more comfortable your feet are, the happier you will feel.

You can then concentrate on the job in hand as we all enjoy a brilliant festive season together.

At Maidenhead Podiatry and Chiropractic Clinic we offer a comprehensive foot care service from trimming nails and removing hard skin/corns to verruca treatment and nail surgery.
